Why Taos?
Why pick Taos, New Mexico, as your stomping ground? Well, there are 10,000 reasons but we’ll just touch upon a few.
Taos Adventure
Do you love the outdoors? Then this is the place for you!
Choose from climbing, hiking, hunting, fishing, mountain biking, skiing, snowshoeing, horseback riding, and more. Or, simply take a scenic drive or walk to explore the volcanic remains of the Taos Plateau and the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument’s steep and deep river gorge.
The history and culture of New Mexico is arguably the most diverse and captivating in the United States. The resilient mix of Native, Spanish and Anglo American cultures has not evolved much since Santa Fe was founded in 1608. Beautifully rugged and endlessly engaging, New Mexico is like stepping into another world.
There’s good news if you’re a photographer, artist, or simply someone who enjoys nature’s beauty—you will be awed by our ever-changing and captivating vistas. Catch the mid-summer rainbow “show”; the alpenglow that bathes the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range in otherworldly hues of pink, purple, and gold; and countless other magical views as well as wildlife (bighorn sheep, elk, etc.) sightings.
Taos is ranked nationally as one of the best small towns with big-city arts and culture. From more than 1,000 years—back when the Tiwa first built their multi-level adobe pueblo that is now a UNESCO World Heritage site—artisans and artists (including musicians) have drawn inspiration from these surroundings.
To get a better sense of it all, come visit. Take in a free concert by one of many local bands at one of several venues that offers live music. Browse the diverse art galleries, museums, and shops of the downtown historic district. Taos Plaza is the center of it all but a short walk brings you to restaurants and local stores that you won’t want to miss.
There are countless adventures within driving distance of Taos, too. Take the 56-mile High Road, an official scenic byway that links Taos and Santa Fe; it’s like stepping back to a time when New Mexico belonged to Old Spain. Subscribe to the summer opera season of the internationally renowned Santa Fe Opera. Visit the towering remains of the Chaco Culture National Historical Park, where thousands lived between 850 and 1250 A.D.
Speaking of architecture, you may just wish to drive around Taos to get a feel for the building styles. They range from traditional southwestern Pueblo Revival, Mission, and Territorial style structures—often made of adobe (bricks of mud and straw)—to more whimsical and self-sustaining earthships, to sleek modern designs.
We haven’t even covered half of the reasons why you should choose Taos, New Mexico, but think that you get the picture.
